Located on the St. John's River in North Central Florida, Putnam County was formed in January, 1849. It was named for Major Benjamin Alexander Putnam, a St. Augustine attorney who had served as an officer in the Second Seminole War. |

Incorporated areas of Putnam County include Palatka (the county seat), Crescent City, Interlachen, Panoma Park, and Welaka. Other towns and villages include Bardin, Baywood, Bostwick, Carraway, East Palatka, Edgar, Florahome, Frances, Fruitland, Georgetown, Grandin, Hollister, Johnson, Keuka, Mannville, Melrose, Norwalk, Orange Springs, Putnam Hall, and Satsuma.
