Census records show Lenah Elliott Mays name variously as Lenah, Leeanna, and Juliana.

According to Clarke family Bible records, Lenah was born in Tuscumbia,AL. This was probalby in Franklin
Co,AL. Tuscumbia did not exist in 1822. Geographically, it is correct, but the Clarke family, from which

this Bible entry was obtained, wrote the Bible entry after her life span. The Northern part of Franklin Co,AL

became Colbert Co, Al in 1872.

Josiah and Lenah had the following children:

+ 2 F i. Mary Catherine Mays was born on 28 Dec 1842. She died on 21 Jun 1907.

We have been unable to find a marriage record (or any other records) for her.

6 M  v. William Emmett Mays was born on 31 Jul 1852 in Columbus, Ms. He died on 19 Apr 1943 in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA. He was buried in Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge, LA.

Emmett was captain of a penitentiary in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Clarence Mays [2.10]stayed with Emmett for about a year. The Emmett Mays family is rumored to have prospered in Louisiana, owning several commercial properties in Baton Rouge aroundthe LSU (Louisiana State University) area. There were supposedly no children. The 1880 census shows that an Emmett Mays, aged about 25, was living in the East Texas town of Robertson.   That same census lists his occupation as “Prison Sergeant”. From family interviews, we know that he was a prison “captain” at the Baton Rouge penitentiary.

William E. Mays left a will, executed 10 May 1932, leaving his entire estate to his wife. His will was probate #4168, and filed in the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court’soffice on 21 Oct. 1943. He had a net estate valued at $9,121.66. His real estate included one lot in Grass Town fronting St. Hypolite Street (now North Sixth), one lot bounded by Asia, East, and South Streets, a fractional lot in Spanish Town on Boyd Ave., and a fractional lot in Industry Town on Union Street (now North Eighth).

Professional retained research found no indications of children.

Her nearest relatives were two sisters, Mrs. Lelia Montan Beauchamp (who died shortly after), formerly the wife of Boatner B. Beauchamp, and Mrs. Katherine M. Kasper, formerly the wife of John A. Kasper, both residents of East Baton Rouge.

Probate #4390, Mrs. Mattie Montan Mays, filed 16 June 1944. She left no will. Her net estate was valued at $21,000.52.

2. Mary Catherine Mays (Josiah Ellis) was born on 28 Dec 1842 in Tuscaloosa, AL. She died on 21 Jun 1907 in Mayhew, Ms. She was buried in Mayhew cemetery, Lowndes County, Ms.

The 1900 census of Lowndes County, MS. has Mary C. Clarke and children Sarah Lee (Sallie), Annie B. and George Clarke living on the Wright farm near Caledonia, MS. with Joseph Frank and Lucy Clarke Wright, her daughter. It further shows that Mattie D. Clarke Wright, also her daughter, and husband, Reuben Hollis Wright were living next door on the Wright farm owned by Elias Garner Wright.

Mary married James Thomas Clarke on 18 Nov 1860 in Mayhew, Clay County, Ms. James was born on 20 May 1826 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. He died on 7 Apr 1885 in Clay County, Ms. He was buried in Mayhew cemetery, Lowndes County, Ms.

The family settled in the Tibbee Creek area near Mayhew Junction, Lowndes County. They had one child, Sarah Lee before James T. Clarke joined the CSA. After his capture at Vicksburg, MS. on July 4, 1863,  he was parolled and returned to his farm where they had 9 more children. After James T. Clarke was killed by a farm hand in 1885, Mary Catherine Clarke apparently moved to the Wright farm near Caledonia, MS. with 3 of her children. In the 1900 census of the Caledonia, MS beat, Lowndes County, MS. Mary Catherine Clarke along with 3 of her children, Sarah, Annie and George were recorded as living on the Wright farm with J.F. and Lucy Clarke Wright and next door to Rueben Hollis and Mattie Dora
Clarke Wright (near or with two of her married daughters). This probably occurred due to the untimely death of James T. Clarke who left 10 children, with Annie being only one year old when he died.

E.W.Lacey and the 3rd Bn. by Lt. Col. Thomas A. Burgin. Copies of official pay and service records from the MS. On 4 July 1863, he signed a parole under oath that he would not serve again in theCSA and bear arms against the United States of America. He returned to his farm in what is now Clay County (formed in 1871 from part of Lowndes County and had 9 more children after the Civil war.

According to family information passed from his daughter, Anne B. Clarke Rickman, to her son, Samuel Rickman Jr. and as explained in an interview with Sam Jr. in his home in Vernon, AL. on 25 July 1999, James T. Clarke was killed by a drunk farm hand in 1885 when he slipped up behind him and hit him in the back of the head with an oak single tree. A single tree is a round oak pole about 4 ft long by 5 inches in diameter used to hitch a mule to a farm implement. He died a week after the attack on 7 April 1885.

I got lists from a reading of the cemetery in the 80's by a group of gals in Lake Co. who read most of the cemeteries over about a 10 yr period. Then I went around 2002 to the cemetery and copied the names they had listed in their office. Next we will be walking the cemetery to see which has the correct info when there are discrepancies as there are in your case with the last name. Hope this helps. Check back again to see if we have completed the cemetery. It will probable take a couple of months at least as it is one of the largest cemeteries in Lake.

I would love to have a bio on any of these you would care to share with me for the bio page on the Lake Co Site. Pictures are appreciated as well.

Dora married Joseph Henry Randolph son of Joseph Tucker Randolph and Susannah Marion Reed on 25 Dec 1879 in Oktibbeha, Mississippi. Joseph was born on 18 Aug 1859 in Oktibbeha County, MS. He died on 3 Jul 1927 in Lake Co., FL. He was buried in Lone Oak Cemetery, Lake Co., FL.

Not sure if this is the right Dora Mays. She was born about 1858 which would have put her at age 21 in 1879.
She is found in the 1860 and 1870 census.
She is not found in the 1880 census.
Her brother, John Quincy Mays, lived iin Oktibehha County.

Joseph and Dora had the following children:

8. Dallas Buford Mays (Josiah Ellis) was born on 3 Sep 1863 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Ms. He died on 10 Nov 1941 in San Saba, San Saba Co., Texas. He was buried in Richland Springs Cemetery, Richland Springs, San Saba Co., Texas.

The family has very little knowledge of D. B. Mays. He was born in the middle of the Civil War (1863).
According to Vista (Mays) Smith, he was born in Alabama; however, census records show that his place of birth was Mississippi. His mother, Lenah Elliot Mays, died when Dallas was about 11. His father, Josiah, re-married in 1876 when Dallas was 15. By the time he was 17 (in 1880), the census record for Oktibbeha Co., MS shows that he was living with his older brother, John Quincy Mays and working on the farm. His son, Emmett Hilary Mays (2.1) was born in 1889, when D. B. was 26. Dallas’ family apparently lived in several places (Ethelsville, AL, West Point, MS, and Big Springs, MS) indicated by the birth locations of several of the children. He moved his family to Limestone County, Texas in 1896. The family
eventually settled in the Hill Valley area of San Saba County, but the farm went broke and by 1910 they were forced to move to East Texas. Sometime later the family returned to the Richland Springs area of San Saba County. The family was Methodist

The Goode family is well documented by other researchers. The family can trace it’s lineage well back to about 1200 A.D. Alice Rowene Goode of West Point, MS and Big Spring MS was the daughter Charles Augustus (Gus) Goode and Susan Coggin Goode. This family had the following children: Leona Bandy Goode, Ellen Wade Goode, Laura Wade Goode, Betty Aycock Goode, Clarence Goode, Ned Spaudling (Ed) Goode. Her mother (Susan) died on 27 JUL 1886 and her father (Gus) married Mollie Coggins.
They had Cora Goode and Walter L. Goode.

A recent reference to this family was written by Louise Goode Shannon. Entittled "Goode Family", it can be found in special collection libraries at major universities and libraries.

Bob Goode of Texas A& M and the Washington Redskins was Alice Goode's nephew. [2.6.1] Robert L. Goode is listed in the Texas A&M Association of Former Students. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in physical education (PHED). According to the Letterman’s Association, “the last information we had on him showed his address in Cambridge OH. He has since moved and we do not have his new address”.

Tom Goode of West Point, MS is the son of WALTER L. GOODE was born 16 Aug 1915 and died 24 Mar 1995. His grandfather was Walter L(eslie) Goode. Tom also claims that he thinks they had a “Gus” in the family. Walter L. Goode was the son of Charles Augustus Goode and Mollie Coggins Goode and therefore a half-brother to Alice Rowena Goode.
