Judge Dalton Hugher Yancey was born in Greenville, South
Carolina February 13, 1845, son of William Lowndes Yancey and Caroline (Earle)
Yancey. His father was one of the foremost figures in the Southern
Confederacy, having served in the United States Congress for two terms as
a Representative from Alabama, and in 1861 was appointed by President Jefferson
Davis as Minister Plenipotentiary to Europe. He returned from Europe
in 1862 and was elected to the Confederate Senate. The Yanceys had
come to this country from Wales in 1642 with Governor Sir William Berkely
and settled in Virginia. W. L. Yancey’s grandfather, James Yancey,
served as lieutenant in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
Dalton H. Yancey moved with his family to Alabama where
they settled in the neighborhood of Wetumpka. He attended the University
at Montgomery, the College at LaGrange, and in 1861 entered the University
of Alabama but left in 1863 to enter the Confederate Army. He served
as captain of the 7th Alabama Company, Claton’s Brigade, throughout the
war, the company being sent to the Gulf Coast where it did patrol duty from
Pensacola to the western towns of Mississippi. In 1864 his regiment
was transferred to the Forrest Brigade and became part of the Forest Scouts;
he remained with this command until the end of the war. He surrendered
at Athens, Georgia, April, 1865.
After the close of the war he entered the University
of Georgia and received his degree in 1866. In 1867 he and his brother
Benjamin C. Yancey, left for Brazil, but finding the country unfavorable,
he returned to this country in 1868.
On October 14, 1869, at Cusseta, Georgia, he married
Hettie McCook, only daughter of W. Wright McCook and Ruhamah (Wilson) Harp
McCook. He made his home at Cussetta for a while and was made Trustee
