C. A. Vaughn, a resident of Lake County
for the past twenty-five years, was born in Cumberland County, North
Carolina, September 11, 1878, son of R. J. and Jane Vaughn.
After leaving school in North Carolina,
he entered the turpentine business with his father, which he later
followed in Higley,
Florida, from 1903 to 1912. Since 1912, he has been actively
engaged
in the citrus industry and is one of the principal owners of the Rhea
Groves,
Inc., located about eight miles west of Umatilla. This
company owns
about 8,000 acres of land and has at present about 1,000 acres in
bearing
trees, and is therefore one of the largest citrus developments in the
state.
Mr. Vaughn has always given a great deal
of his time and attention to the advancement of Umatilla, and served as
Mayor of the town
for six years. During his administration, the first sidewalks were laid
in
the town and the first city ordinances were drawn up.
He is a prominent Mason and a Shriner,
and also belongs to the Knights of Pythias. He was married at
Umatilla, to Ella Smith, a native of the County, and is the proud
father of eight children:
Mildred Louise, Hallie, Edward C., Robert Lee, Joe A., C. A., Jr.,
Donald
M, and Wilma Ray.
