DANIEL. SEYLER

D. Seyler     In every community there are certain citizens who strive unceasingly to better the moral and civic tone of their town, and such a man was Daniel Seyler, of Lady Lake, whose death on October 17, 1928, was greeted as a great material and spiritual loss to the community of Lady Lake, and to the county as well.
He was born in Selchenbach, Germany, November 30, 1862, and came to the United States in 1882, immediately becoming a naturalized citizen, which prompt action on his part was an early indication of the interest and love he had for the country of his adoption.
He first settled in Marietta, Ohio, and remained there for two years.  He then came to Florida, locating in Lady Lake in 1884, thus being one of the early pioneers of this section of the state.  He came to this county to grow citrus fruit and to care for groves.  He later started to grow watermelons, and was so successful with his melons that he was known as the “Watermelon King of Lake County.”
Mr. Seyler was considered a man thoroughly reliable in all his business dealings, always displaying good, sound business judgment.  In 1895, when the entire state suffered on account of the freeze, Mr. Seyler was one of the few who did not lose heart and give up, but, as a true Florida booster, started his citrus developments over again.  No matter what the adversity, Mr. Seyler was always a great believer in the future of Florida, and it is men such as he that the present residents of the state have to thank for the many advantages they now enjoy.
In addition to his groves and his watermelon developments, Mr. Seyler acquired much valuable real estate and was a large property holder in many sections of Lake County.
He was always very active in civic affairs, having at heart the best interest of his community.  At the time of his death he was the senior member of the local school board and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the town council.
Mr. Seyler was an active member of the Woodmen of the World, serving as Treasurer for a number of years.  He was also a member of the Methodist Church, and was a Director of the First National Bank at Leesburg.
Mr. Seyler was married at Marietta, Ohio, to Elizabeth Drumm, and they have had ten children, four of whom died in infancy.  They have three sons and three daughters living:  Amelia (Mrs. C. F. Johnson), Emma M., Arthur A., Paul D., Elsie (Mrs. G. K. Hardaway), and Eugene O.  Mr. Seyler’s home life was ideal.  He was always a kind husband and good father.

CAPTAIN THOMAS H. SIMMONS

Captain Thomas H. Simmons was born of Maryland parentage, November 26, 1834, in Jersey County, Illinois.  He was the owner and operator of a large flour mill in Illinois as well as large farming interests, and from 1882 until his death in 1910 spent all his winters in Eustis and was always a great booster for this town, which he greatly loved, believing it to be the garden spot of the South.  He was one of the builders of Eustis, in fact he invested many thousands of dollars in Florida property in the early days, when it took a great belief in the future of the place to do so.
Mr. Simmons was educated at McKendree College, one of the oldest colleges in Illinois.  He served throughout the Civil War as Captain of Co. F, 14th Illinois Infantry.  He was prominent in Masonic circles; a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a man of sterling honor and integrity, of whom it may well be said “he was a Christian gentleman.”

Mr. Simpson and his parents were among the first people who settled at the present site of Mt. Dora, and the privations and hardships which such people as he and his parents had to put up with in the early days are in striking contrast to the modern comfort and beautiful cities which the present-day Florida people are privileged to live in.  But the miraculous progress which Florida has made is due in large measure to the early pioneer work which men like Mr. Simpson did.
Mr. Simpson was a member of the Baptist Church, and his fraternal affiliations were with the Odd Fellows.
He was married at Taylor County, Florida, to Mary W. Vann and was the proud father of ten children: M. V., William D. (deceased), Jesse M. (Mrs. E. Pike), Mary Louise (deceased), J. W.
