Kirkland

This information comes from the book " A History of Altoona and It's Surrounding Area" published by the Altoona Centennial Committee: " Kirkland - Antebellum - R. L. Kirkland settled in Poinceana in 1858 where he raised cattle and citrus. He was deeded land in Altoona in 1878 and owned a grist mill that ground corn into meal and grits to provide food for convict labor while they built the railroad grade. [His son] S. P. Kirkland was a State Representative from Altoona from 1905 to 1909 serving two terms".  This is evidently the family of Jane Kirkland who married Elbert D Dykes and is buried in the Ponceannah Cemetery.
