DOUGLAS R. IGOU
Douglas R. Igou is a native son of Eustis, having
been born there November 6, 1902, son of Senator W. M. Igou, a sketch
of whom will be found elsewhere in this volume. He received his education
in the schools of Eustis and attended the University of Florida for two
years and the University of New Mexico for one year.
He has been Vice-President of his father’s firm
of W. M. Igou and Company for the past seven years, and under his management
this company is doing a very extensive trade in farm implements, feed and
grain, live stock, dairy and poultry supplies, etc. In all there are
over sixteen departments in the business, and customers of the company are
to be found all over the State of Florida.
Mr. Igou is a member of the Eustis Country Club,
of the Rotary Club, and of the local Chamber of Commerce. His college
fraternity is Pi Kappa Alpha.

SENATOR W. M. IGOU
Senator W. M. Igou, as resident of Lake County
for the past twenty-five years, and one of the outstanding citizens of
Eustis, was born at Ringold, Georgia, on September 28, 1871, son of Jackson
Douglas and Lucretia Whitman Igou. When a small boy his parents moved
to Tennessee, where he attended school.
His first visit to Florida was in the winter of
1885, when he came to this State to visit his uncle, J. M. Igou, who
was one of the early pioneers. He spent two or three more winters
in the State and finally in 1893 decided to make it his permanent home,
and moved to Grand Island where his uncle resided, and became associated
with him in the orange growing business. After the freeze of 1895
he purchased all of his uncle’s citrus interests at Grand Island and continued
to live there until 1906, although about three years prior to this he had
opened a live stock and livery business in Eustis, which subsequently became
known as W. M. Igou, Inc.
The firm of W. M. Igou, Inc., handles live stock,
feeds, fertilizers, insecticides, wagons, farm and grove machinery, harness,
etc., and is one of the largest concerns of its kind in the State of
Florida.
Senator Igou has continued to be actively interested
in orange growing and is the owner of about 100 acres of bearing groves
in Lake County. He was one of the original members of the Committee
of Fifty which was appointed to organize the new Clearing House Association,
of which he is a director. He was one of the original stockholders
in the First State Bank of Eustis, of which he is now Vice-President.
Senator Igou’s political career is particularly
deserving of mention: he served one term as a member of the Board of
County Commissioners of Lake County, and one term in the Lower House
of the State Legislature, and fourteen years as a member of the State
Senate, a record probably unequalled in the history of Lake County.
Senator Igou is a member of the Rotary Club, is
a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Knights of Pythias.
He was married at Grand Island to Annie Netherland, and has three children:
Willie (Mrs. Howard Gamble), Douglas, and Hugh.

CHARLES ISTED
Charles Isted was born at Whitehall, Illinois, November
5, 1872, son of William and Mary Isted.
He received his education in the schools of Illinois
and started work at the early age of fourteen. When he was only eighteen,
he entered the bank at Whitehall.
Believing that the South, particularly Florida, presented
great opportunities, Mr. Isted came to Eustis in 1903. at which time he
purchased the controlling interest in the firm known as W. S. McClelland,
Banker, which was doing a small business. He reorganized this company
into the First State Bank of Eustis, of which he is now President and two-thirds
owner.
Under Mr. Isted’s able management, the First State
Bank has shown a most remarkable growth. When he purchased the McClelland
firm the deposits amounted to about $30,000.00; at the present time the
First State Bank deposits are approximately one and a half million dollars,
and it is known as one of the conservative and stable banks of the State,
and it is noteworthy that among its depositors are many residents outside
the strictly Eustis territory. The growth of this institution typifies
the energy and business judgment of Mr. Isted, and is an index to the growth
and progress of the community and its faith in him.
Besides his connection with the Bank, Mr. Isted has
taken an important part in various other directions: he is Vice-President
of the Morse-Isted-Merderau Company and is Treasurer of the Fountain Inn
Company, one of the most popular resort hotels of the State, of which Mr.
Frank D. Waterman of New York City is the leading spirit. In addition
to his strictly commercial interests, Mr. Isted is also a large orange growers
and is the owner of much valuable real estate in Lake County.
He is a charter member and ex-President of the famous
Rotary Club of Eustis. Fraternally he is a member of the Knights of Pythias.
