Fort Valley State College  became known as Fort Valley State University in 1996..  
It was the only land-grant university in Georgia in 1890.
FVSU was founded as a black university.  It is now apart of the University System of Georgia and
students receive scholarships from the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund.  
The student population of 3,000 is 94% African American.  The population is comprised of students
from more than 30 states and about 10 countries around the word.  

The town of Fort Valley has always been proud of this heritage and has
supported the college through the years.
