U.S. Marine and World War II Medal of Honor recipient (posthumous) Robert Miller McTureous, Jr. was born 26 Mar 1924 in Altoona, Lake County, Florida and died 11 Jun 1945 in Okinawa, Japan. He was reinterred with his family in Glendale Cemetery, Umatilla, Florida. Robert was
the son of Robert Miller McTureous and Bessie Palmer. Robert
and Bessie were married in Lake County, 5 Oct 1910, by Daniel
Palmer. Robert was born 9 Oct 1886 at Charleston, South
Carolina, son of Basil J. McTureous and Mary Adams
Alexander. Bessie was born 11 Dec 1892 at Altoona,
daughter of Daniel Palmer and Mary Jane Dykes.
He died 17
Apr 1959 and she died 6 Apr 1986, Lake County. They were
buried Glendale Cemetery, Umatilla.
Basil J.
McTureous of Altoona, was born 23 May 1849 in Charleston, Beaufort
County, South Carolina and died 16 Dec 1909, Lake County,
Florida. During the War he served in the Home Guard at
Charleston. He married about 1884, Mary Adams Alexander, born
14 Apr 1857 in Charleston and died 6 Jun 1921, Larkins, Dade County,
Florida. Children born in Charleston, South Carolina were
Laura born May 1882, Annie born Jul 1885, Robert Miller born 9 Oct 1887
and died 17 Apr 1959 and Edwin Williams born Dec 29 1890 and died Aug
17 1947. They came to Lake county between 1900 and 1909.
Daniel
Palmer was married second to Mary Jane Dykes at Altoona, 14 Mar
1889. Daniel was born Nov 1834, Burlington, Ontario, Canada,
and died 5 Nov 1916, Umatilla, Lake County. Mary Jane,
daughter of Jasper J. Dykes, was born 25 Aug 1869 at Altoona and died 6
May 1925 at Altoona.
THOMAS
MILTON McTUREOUS of Altoona, was born April 14, 1845, Charleston,
Beaufort County, South Carolina and died January 3, 1910, Lake
County. He came to Florida January 16, 1882 and married
October 15, 1885, Orange County, Florida to Mary Elmira/Elvira
McTureous. She was born January 30, 1845 in Charleston, South
Carolina and died July 27, 1930, Umatilla, Lake County. They
are buried Glendale Cemetery, Umatilla. They were with his
brother Basil in 1900 in Charleston. Thomas served as a
Private in Company G, 5th Cavalry Regiment (Ferguson's Regiment) South
Carolina. He was a UCV member of Camp Sumter #250,
Charleston, South Carolina (25 September 1907) (FCPA #A04404,
21 Sep 1907, Altoona) complete
