February 15,
2011 105 East Main is now owned by Beacon College.
It will be demolished to make way for their new building.
Following is information about the family who built and inhabited
the house.
Erastus Claburn Hood was born August 1865, Harris County, Ga., son of
Erastus C. Hood and Mary A. L. Cochran. He died June 22,
1927, Cataula, Harris County, Ga. and was buried in Lone Oak Cemetery,
Leesburg, Florida.
E. C. married Lola E. Wright, October 20, 1891. Ocala, Marion County, Florida.
Lola was born February 1866 in Union Springs, Bullock, Alabama,
daughter of Robert G. Wright and Jane G. Frazier Jelks. She died
June 1958 and was buried Lone Oak Cemetery, Florida.
Children of E. C. and Lola were:
Jane 'Jennie" Mary born October 22, 1892 and died January 12, 1977.
She married December 2, 1914, Julian Herndon born February 5,
1887, Elberton, Georgia, and died October 1966. Children: Lola
Elizabeth Herndon Matthews & Julian H. Herndon, Jr.
Elizabeth was born January 6, 1896, Columbus, Georgia and died
Leesburg, February 22, 1938. She married about 1917, James Harper
Worrill, born December 19, 1891 and died April 5, 1961. Children:
James Harper Worrill, Jr. , Edmond Hood Worrill, Elizabeth "Betty" J.
Worrill (m. Basil Lionel Truscott)
The house currently at 105 East Main Street was built by E. C. and Lola
Hood, and was inhabited by the family until 1977, when Jane Mary Hood
Herndon died. Lola was deeded the property (Lot 4, block 48) by
Frank P. and Nannie E. Webster in April 1910. The 1930 census
shows the family at 109 E. Main, consistent with the 1939 city
directory. The 109 number in 1924 shows the residents as Jams
& Maggie Wilson, who by 1939 were numbered as 123 East Main.
1920 Federal census does not give a street number; they are listed next
to Elias Folsom who in 1924 is at 213 E. Main and the Hooks family at
207 E. Main, and a few houses from the Stoer family. The
censustaker could have skipped around, and our Wilson family is not
listed at all.
They are not in the 1910 census. Isabella Keeling's boarding
house was at the southeast corner of Main and Palmetto, where the
fitness building now stands. The neighbor is Joel Jeffcoat.
The Jeffcoats were granted Lot 3 Block 48 in 1908. The
census was done in April, the same month Hoods received their lot.
One would wish for a magic carpet to take us back.
