WOMAN PIONEER PHILANTHROPIST IS LAID TO REST

Indiana Roach gave all of herself with her money donations.

When loving friends laid to rest the aged body of Indiana Stivender Roach on Tuesday morning, there ceased a continuing philanthropy that had been unbroken in Leesburg for almost three quarters of a century.
That long ago, at the age of 12, she came here with her parents.  They sought other fields, came back, passed away, but she remained in Leesburg.  Except for a few years, while she was with one of her sons, she made this her home, married, raised her two boys, saw them married, watched their careers.  But she never lost sight of the needs of the people around her.  Fortunate in some of her investments in later years she was able to dispose some charity in lumps that meant much to those whom she supplied.
First came her church.  Baptist all her life, she took a personal interest in every movement inside the church.  If it was a new building, she donated so heavily that she surprised many others into larger donations than they had planned.  If it were a work of mercy, she not only supplied the small funds needed by the group that had undertaken the work, but she went along and helped do what was necessary.  And never did she obtrude her own personality into any project because of what she had done or given.  For that reason she was never envied, but always loved by her coworkers.
As old age approached and Mrs. Roach saw she would have plenty of this world's goods to end her days in comfort, she became even more liberal with her church.  The infirmities of age seemed to stay themselves and permit her to attend services without anyone to accompany long after most people have gone to their eternal rest.  And when special needs developed, she again contributed of her diminishing store of worldly goods, knowing in her own heart that she would not outlive what was left.
Mrs. Roach earned and proudly wore her title of "Mother" in the First Baptist Church.  For she was truly the mother of that church as it exists today.  Every pastor was her special friend and everyone that came was just a little better, just a little more lovable, according to "Mother" Roach, than the one she had just let get away.
So when it came to holding funeral services for this woman on Tuesday morning, the church was filled with folks who were dewey-eyed and sincere in their homage to the departed.  Doctor Montgomery spoke with deepest feeling and Rev. Montgomery, long years a close friend, struck deeply into the hearts of all who heard.  And the deacons of the church were her pallbearers.  Not all could serve actively in carrying her form to the graveside, but they divided, George Webster, Carey Franklin, T.B. Stinson, Fred Bacon, C.P. Farrell acting as honorary pallbearers and H.P. Rozier, A.S. Davis, Earl Jenkins, Dan Hunt, S.Q. Casteen and G.W. Pringle carrying the casket that contained her body.
Interment was made in Lone Oak Cemetery under direction of the Beyers funeral home and the First Baptist Church will see to it that the ground where she was laid is hallowed and always will be covered with evergreens or blossoms.
Two sons are left to mourn her passing, Fred of Jacksonville and James of Tampa.  Also there are three grandchildren.  The son from Jacksonville and the family, including a married daughter from Washington. D.C., Mrs. Lester Huffman, were here during her last days and at her funeral.
