CAMP BLANDING CEMETERIES

Message from Fannie Young.
"This is information sent to my sister and I on the Camp Blanding Cemeteries. I have copied it word for word. At the end of it, I will give you the information they relayed to us when we asked to go in and survey the areas. Please read all of it. Also, this will be sent to the PA lists, as this area was populated by many Pennsylvanians. As usual, if you want to put this on your web page, you have my
permission, in advance.
Fannie Young and Marylou Ginn"

"Records reflect that five cemetery sites are located on the Camp Blanding Military Reservation. Four of these are civilian cemeteries and one formerly a World War II Prisoner of War Cemetery. The four civilian cemeteries were formerly associated with a church or congregation and existed on the land, which was acquired when Camp Blanding was established in 1939. During World War II, a German Prisoner of War Cemetery was established to provide a burial place for deceased prisoners of war who were detained there. This cemetery was closed 25 April, 1946 and the deceased moved to Ft. Benning Georgia National Cemetery.
The cemeteries are identified as follows:
Oak Grove
Beulah
German Prisoner of War
Blue Pond
Lee

All of the cemeteries are marked and fenced. Access roads and trails leading to them are clear and passable. Visitors must use caution as the trails are narrow and rough and in some instances seasonal vegetation may scratch the automobile finish.
Histories and descriptions of each cemetery follow.

At the time we were trying to get into Blanding to survey these cemeteries, we were told we COULD NOT visit, because some of the cemeteries were in IMPACT AREAS. If we went in, we had to have an escort to guide us so we wouldn't get hurt. I didn't know that the Army was allowed to desecrate graves in this manner, as what's against the law for us should also be against the law for them. And their desecration is worse, because they use bombs and shells when they do it. Just my opinion, if I didn't feel strongly about the past, I wouldn't be in mosquito and snake infested out of the way areas writing down who is in what grave.....But I do care, and I don't think it's right. Now if I only knew what to do about it.......

Fannie
Now to list the residents of these cemeteries"

There has been some natural deteriation of the tombstones. The fence has been bent down in two or three locations but is still upright. There is no indication of vandalism.

It is likely the number of the burials listed in the sub section above are among those counted as unmarked/unidentified. However, as the roster found seems to have come from some other source (church records?) there is no way to reconcile the list and the physical survey. The cemetery is in good condition. Stones are for the most part upright.
The fence is in good condition. No vandalism observed. The cemetery requires general groundskeeping activity, estimate: 5 hours.

>From the road intersection (paved) at 07851305 travel south-east on paved road (broken) to the first left turn (dirt). Turn left and travel north-east for 25 m. to the first right turn. Turn right and follow the road (dirt) south-east through two curves. The cemetery is located 5 m. off the left hand side of the road just after the curves.
20 X 30 m.
An earlier memo on this burial site indicates that all bodies were removed and transported to a military cemetery at Ft. Benning, GA. in 1946. Existing markers are composed of concrete in a half dome shape. The markers stand approximately 6" high and are set in pairs. The site was originally fenced but only a few posts remain as of the time of the survey. No fencing between posts exist. No vandalism observed. The ground clearing operation being conducted at the time of the survey should be continued. New fencing and fence posts are also required. Estimated time for such work: 10 hours, excluding fencing
